The municipality of Ruidera is located at the mouth of the Laguna del Rey lake. This small town that was once a village, belonging to the province of Ciudad Real, is located at an altitude of 765 metres above sea level. Its municipal area covers 40.4 kilometres of rippling, rolling and mountainous terrain, with almost no flatlands. Ruidera reached the height of its splendour under the reign of King Charles III, who extended the Order of San Juan and created a Mayorazgo-Infantazgo (Primogeniture-Principality), which became known as a Royal Site. This period saw the construction of the gunpowder factory and the small royal palace, or Palacete Real, which can still be seen today.
